Barry M. Appell has spent most of his years of practice litigating harassment, discrimination, retaliation, wrongful termination, wage and hour, and other employment related claims, including class actions. 

 

After several years representing only employers, in 2004, Mr. Appell started his own law firm, Appell Hilaire Benardo LLP, representing employees and employers, until 2012, when Mr. Appell joined with Scott Shapiro to form Appell Shapiro LLP. 

 

Mr. Appell has successfully litigated many cases, including multi-million dollar wage and hour class actions. He has prevailed many times in the California Courts of Appeal, including in the published decision in the case of Silver v. Boatwright. Mr. Appell has also been cited as a legal commentator by the court in the appellate decision in Grafton Partners LP v. Superior Court. 

 

His dedication to his clients and his record of success resulted in Mr. Appell being named among the best lawyers in Southern California when he was named a Rising Star in 2004, and then has been named a Superlawyer every year since 2005. 

 

Mr. Appell is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, the San Fernando Valley Bar Association, and the California Employment Lawyers Association. He has also volunteered as a mediator at the Los Angeles County Superior Court. Mr. Appell graduated from UC Hastings College of the Law in 1994 and from California State University, Northridge, cum laude, in 1991.

Scott E. Shapiro

Scott E. Shapiro is a successful business litigator and trial attorney. He is admitted to practice law in all California State and Federal Courts. Mr. Shapiro has represented the prevailing parties in several seven figure actions, jury trials, class actions, and appeals, including in actions defended by highly regarded and successful Los Angeles litigation firms. 

 

Mr. Shapiro graduated from the University of California, at Riverside, earning a B.A. degree in Liberal Studies, with a dual emphasis on Administrative Studies and American History. Mr. Shapiro speaks and reads Spanish fluently, as he was raised in Puerto Rico and thereafter continued Spanish studies in High School and College. Mr. Shapiro's bilingual skills are particularly useful in Los Angeles. 

 

Mr. Shapiro attended Southwestern University School of Law, in Los Angeles, California, where he earned his Juris Doctorate degree. During law school, Mr. Shapiro participated in externships with the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office, obtaining a conviction in a jury trial on behalf of the DA's office prior to graduating law school, and also clerked in Department 66 of the Los Angeles Superior Court, Writs of Attachment and Possession Department. 

 

For several years, Mr. Shapiro worked for Aaronson & Aaronson in Encino, California, handling contract, fraud, construction, and intellectual property actions. In 1999, Mr. Shapiro established his own practice, focusing on complex business litigation, trial work, and class actions. 

 

Mr. Shapiro has successfully handled several class actions while working with attorney Barry M. Appell, including seven figure wage and hour actions. Mr. Shapiro is a founding partner of Appell Shapiro, LLP.
